Yard signs were originally designed by security companies to help local authorities find homes in the event of an emergency. When a home had a security system installed and monitored, the security company would place a sign in the yard so that the fire department, police or an ambulance could quickly identify the home that had a alarm triggered. Over time it was found that when these signs were seen by criminals, they would most likely avoid that particular home and find another to victimize. All of these factors have diminished the effectiveness for sign to thwart crime. Also, some security system customers avoid having signs in their yards because it is a signal to the criminal that the home is monitored. This way the criminal can attempt to disable the system while they victimize the occupants.
