Many apartment dwellers seeking to protect their homes are finding that large companies like Brinks (now Broadview) and ADT are not a good fit for their home. Most security systems that are quoted by them are hard wired and that is not feasible in an apartment. Also, these larger companies want long term contracts that actually have the price of the system built into the monthly payments. But, there are other solutions currently available. For one thing, the companies that manufacture the systems all make them 100% with wireless contacts, motion detectors, fire and smoke detectors and all other devices and they do not need to be "hard" wired into the panel. Also, they make compact systems that have the control panel and keypad built together. There is a package made by DSC ( www.dsc.com ) that has 2 wireless contacts, 1 wireless motion detector, a key fob with a control panel and keypad with a wireles receiver. It is EASY for the occupant to install and it is easy to take with them when they move. Of course it can be monitored by the large, licensed monitoring central stations provided by companies like Interstate Alarm Monitoring. And they can also have a cellular device attached so that a "land line" (POTS) from a phone company is not necessary.
