Home Invasion

One of the worst crimes to be a victim of is the home invasion.  Sometimes a ccriminal poses as a person of authority wearing a uniform and/or having an official ID and saying they are authorities from the city or county.  A couple of things to remember.  Do not open your door every time someone knocks.  Have a wide peep hole viewing device in your front door.  Do not let someone in unless they call first and you can confirm their identity. At times someone may ask to use your phone because of an emergency.  They may even have a child with them. Do not let them in.  Ask them to give you the number they want called and then call it for them.  But, sometimes, criminals may just break your door down.  That is why it is a good idea to have quality locks with deadbolts and oversize screws replacing the screws in the receiving plate in the door.  Even this may not stop the most determined offender.  If they do get in, try to have someone call 911 and they don't have to even talk if they are not able.  Just leave the phone off the hook and let the operator hear what is going on.  They can track the call and get your address and send help.  Even better is to trip the silent alarm on your control panel or your portable key fob if you have a monitored security system.  Depending on your predetermined agreement with your security company, central station operators are trained to call and send your local authorities without calling and checking with you. Most all security systems have this capability, but, most people do not know how to use the option.  If you have a security system, find out how to use this feature.  Finally, do not argue with criminals.  Give them the money or valuables they want and hope that they will be on their way.
